Overview
Azure Backup with Recovery Services Vaults provides policy-driven VM protection to meet organizational compliance requirements for data recovery and business continuity. In this lab, I acted as an Azure administrator responsible for ensuring all production VMs are covered under a backup policy. I created a Recovery Services Vault, enabled VM backup with the Enhanced Policy, triggered an on-demand backup, simulated accidental VM deletion, restored the VM from the recovery point as a new virtual machine, and confirmed it was running — completing the full backup and recovery lifecycle.
What I Did
- Noted the lab VM's region and created a Recovery Services Vault (rsvault-prod-01) in the same region — a requirement for vault-to-VM association
- Enabled Azure Backup for the lab VM from within the vault, selecting the Enhanced Policy and adding lab-VM to the protected items list
- Triggered an on-demand backup job from the Backup items blade and monitored job progress until the Snapshot subtask reached Completed status
- Verified that at least one recovery point appeared on the lab-VM backup item page, confirming a valid point-in-time capture existed
- Simulated accidental data loss by deleting lab-VM from the Virtual Machines blade and confirming it no longer appeared in the list
- Navigated back to the Recovery Services Vault, located the backup item, and initiated a VM restore from the recovery point
- Configured the restore to create a new VM named vm-restored-prod-01 on the existing virtual network (lab-VM-NET, default subnet) using the lab storage account as the staging location
- Monitored the restore job to Completed status, then confirmed vm-restored-prod-01 appeared in Virtual Machines with a Running status — validating full backup and recovery compliance
